On 10 October 2022, ribbon-cutting ceremony a disc golf course has been opened on the beach near AKO memorial complex in Salaspils. The event was attended by Ms. Malda Caune, Deputy Chairperson the City Council, Mr. Valdis Razumovskis, Member of the City Council and one of the initiators of the project, as well as representatives of the Municipality. Mr. Jurijs Siņkevičs, Member of the Board of LDGF, helped to acquire the first skills in playing disc golf.
This game is played similarly to the traditional golf, but instead of hitting a ball into a hole, you have to throw a disc into a special basket with as few shots as possible. In Salaspils there are placed 18 baskets, and the obstacles on the course – trees and relief – make the game both more challenging and more interesting.
In total, more than 30 disc golf courses have been set up in Latvia. Disc golf became particularly popular during the pandemic, when people were looking for more varied outdoor activities. In addition, disc golf is a very democratic sport, as it does not require any special fitness or training and can be played at any age. Even persons in wheelchair can play disc golf.
18 baskets, 9 benches and 9 waste bins have been installed as part of the project “Installation of a disc golf park in the rural area of Salaspils Municipality near the AKO monument” (project No 2022/AL25/8/A019.22.01/1). The total cost of the project is EUR 30 000, of which EUR 27 000 is co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and EUR 3 000 by Salaspils Municipality. The works were carried out by the company SIA “ECOFERM”.
