Daugava museum
This year to the open-air exposition of the Daugava museum will be added Vecpidiņi great pine, in the trunk of which a bee dorm was once carved.
Vecpidiņi pine was discovered and registered as a great tree in 1973 by naturalist Guntis Eniņš. Its circumference at chest height reached 4 meters at that time – when only 3 other pines are at least as thick in Latvia. In vicinity of Riga and Vidzeme this is the largest pine. In terms of height, the pine was not particularly taller than other trees growing in the area. In the pine trunk, at a height of ~ 5 meters, a bee hive has been cut, which according to G.Eniņš was created around the end of 19th century or beginning of the 20th century.
Thanks to the initiative of the neighbors – an environmental protection specialist from Stopiņi district Jānis Šlūke, a researcher of bee-growing trees Agris Āboliņš, and as well with the consent of Arvīds Krūmiņš, the heir of the historic Vecpidiņi farm and with the permit of the Nature Protection Board Vecpidiņi great pine, which was toppled several years ago was moved to the site of the Daugava River Museum on 10th of November, 2020. The great tree will complement the Museum’s exposition with a new story about great trees in Salaspils county, with a story about traditional beekeeping, where bees lived in artificial cavities in trees – dorms and with a story about the events of the First World War in Salaspils county, as historical track bed nails, driven into a tree, show that this tree has been used as a position observation post. This year’s task for the museum specialists will be to include this versatile evidence of history in the exposition of the museum park, installing it in a place suitable for exhibition and supplementing it with information stands.

Salaspils county Tourism information centre
This year, Salaspils county will start a new route for pedestrians – pilgrims, tourists, travelers and lovers of peaceful recreation – Camino Latvia, or a part of route St.James to Santiago de Compostela. The route in the county will be about 18 km long.
The part of the road to St.Jame’s Cathedral in the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela has begun to pass through Latvia in early 2020, and one branch of this road leads from Riga to Skaistkalne, passing through the Salaspils county. This stage of the route is already marked with Camino Santiago stickers and will be supplemented with additional identification marks and poles before the start of the active season.
Salaspils county Tourism Information Centre plans to prepare a route map of the whole branch to all interested parties later in this year.
The second route – “Salaspils Dižkoki” (“Great Trees of Salaspils” ) is under construction, but we do note, that route will consist of ~ 20 stops / sightseeing points, with additional cognitive, entertaining and educational tasks at each of the points.
