On 14 July, 2021, training of tour guides organised by the Salaspils municipality Tourism Information Centre and the Daugava Museum took place at the Salaspils Memorial Ensemble. The training was attended by a total of 24 guides, representing Salaspils and other municipalities of Riga region, as well as several certified guides from Riga. Training was conducted by the director of the Daugava Museum – the historian Zigmārs Gailis, who presented various historical facts about the Salaspils camp, dispelling some popular but historically inaccurate views. Zigmārs Gailis also provided abundant information on the building of the Salaspils Memorial Ensemble, its development over time, and introduced the new indoor exhibition, which was opened in 2018.
Initially 33 guides had applied for training, but due to various circumstances not all could participate. Those who had applied for, but could not come, expressed desire for such training to be organised again, because the Salaspils Memorial Ensemble is a very important object of Latvian history, cultural and artistic heritage, causing interested of both Latvian residents and foreign guests.
The guides who attended the training will be included in the list of priority guides of the Salaspils Memorial Ensemble, to ensure that visitors are provided with true and correct information based on historical facts. It will now be possible to order guided tours at the Salaspils Memorial Ensemble not only in Latvian, English and Russian, but also in German, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese.
